We as humans often wait for the next, fill in the blank, to get started on our new routine. I’ll get started next week. I’ll get started after the holidays. I’ll get started when the kids go back to school. I’ll get started when life slows down a little. I’ll get started as soon as I find the time for it. There will always be a next but what about a now?
I like to treat September the same way that I treat the New Year, as a fresh start. The summer is ending and it is time to get back on track. No more barbecues to throw me off track or backyard beers and the parties definitely start to slow down. I know that it is time to start getting back on my clean eating routine and get my regular workouts in. This though can be a huge challenge as that motivation is lacking some and I definitely don’t have that “feel good” memory of after workout joy. I do have a choice though. I can choose to procrastinate and put it off or I can jump in feet first and just go for it. I choose the second. Why is that? Simple, I know that all the hard work that I have done has not been lost and I know that once I start it will be easy to keep going.
Here are some tips for getting back into your routine.
1. Make a date in your calendar – if you had a date with a friend you wouldn’t cancel so don’t cancel on yourself. Put it in your calendar and keep it!
2. Find a fitness class that you like – check out your local gym or recreation centre for class times. Find one you like and sign up for it. Paying in advance helps to hold you accountable.
3. Plan your food – make a meal plan so when you go grocery shopping you know exactly what you want to buy. Make a grocery list and stick to it.
4. Prepare food ahead of time – pick a day and prep your food for the week. Store in the fridge and/or freeze and pull out the night before. This will save you a ton of time and take away the stress of having to prepare your food every day.
5. Set you goals – Find out what your goal is, make sure it is simple, measureable, attainable, realistic and timely. Then once you have set your goals post them where you can see them every day as a reminder of what you are working towards.
Find it too overwhelming, then pick one thing and start there. You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with one change and once you have accomplished that then pick another change.
